Berg's Potter

For many years, we have had the beautiful pots in terracotta from the Danish, family-owned Bergs Potter. A good Copenhagen story that began in Nørrebro in Copenhagen in 1942. The pots are designed in Denmark and made in Italy from the finest Galestro clay at a small family-owned workshop in Lucca in northern Italy, where pots have been made for generations.

What is terracotta?

Terracotta comes from Italian - terracotta - and means burnt earth (or actually cooked earth!). It is used as a term for unglazed clay goods made from fine slip. Often the term is also used to refer to the clay’s natural, brown-orange color.

The clay pots are fired at extremely high temperatures, which makes the pots extra durable and gives them a long lifespan if you take care of them.

Are the pots frostproof?

The pots have been tested frostproof down to -15 degrees. However, this only applies if the pot is EMPTY - without soil or other material inside. Water, which expands, is the reason a pot cracks! Therefore, if you have planted in the pot, you can prevent or minimize cracks by following these instructions:

- Water must be able to drain from the pot, meaning the hole in the bottom must NOT be blocked by soil or roots. And the soil in the pot must be well-drained. Likewise, the pot should not stand in a saucer during winter, as any excess water in the saucer can freeze and thereby damage the pot.

- Raise the pot from the ground, just a few centimeters, for example by using pot feet.

- Do not move pots that are frozen, meaning pots that have been in below-zero temperatures and are therefore frozen, as they are more porous.
