The kissing tradition under the mistletoe likely began in the Middle Ages and became very popular in Victorian England in the 19th century. The very controlled and proper society could thus find an occasion to kiss, since it was in full public view.
And back to why we kiss specifically under the mistletoe. It is believed that since it hung in the doorway to ward off evil spirits, it was quite natural to greet with a kiss under the mistletoe in the doorway. The custom has gradually moved indoors due to the belief in mistletoe’s beneficial effect on fertility.
At first, in Denmark, kissing was only allowed on Christmas Eve – and if the girl was not kissed, she should not expect to marry within the first year. But we wish you much joy in getting kissed under the mistletoe throughout December.
