In September, we were in Hamburg. We dropped the children off with their grandparents in Gråsten and sped on to Germany. My eldest is 7 years old, and we had actually never done this before, so it was probably about time.
Hamburg has Europe's third largest harbour, so there is water everywhere. A large harbour and plenty of canals. So the houses are a bit further apart, bridges are in themselves just romantic, and the air is simply fresher. At least that's what I tell myself.
We stayed at the Vier Jahreszeiten hotel, which is very central in the city. I chose that hotel because it was so central, and since we only had one overnight stay, it made good sense.
I was in Hamburg about 10 years ago and there we ate minced tartare at Café Paris, which is located in a very beautiful old butcher's shop. Unfortunately, I was not impressed when I saw the guests' plates, so we moved on. We later read that many "proper" restaurants do not serve lunch due to special working time rules. We walked on towards the Elbphilharmonie, thinking we would find a lunch place on the way. We did not, and were quite hungry, so we went into the Westin hotel in the Elbphilharmonie building and ended up sitting in a very dull restaurant but with a truly wonderful view over the Elbe.
